WALK OF FAME PLAN FOR WELSH STARS
A Welsh version of Hollywood's famous Walk of Fame is to be unveiled. Plans are being finalised to honour 30 famous Welsh men and women from today and the past during Cardiff's double anniversary celebrations. Slate plaques honouring the chosen greats will run from near the £106m Wales Millennium Centre and Oval Basin around the waterfront.

They could include singing superstar Tom Jones, actor and composer Ivor Novello and Manchester United star Ryan Giggs. The idea was first mooted two years ago but with Cardiff celebrating a centenary as a city and 50 years as the capital, the council thinks the time is now right for the scheme. They believe it would prove an attraction for visitors. And as in Los Angeles names would be added to the Welsh Walk of Fame from time to time.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Cardiff council executive member for sport, leisure and culture, said: "The intention is to draw up a shortlist from which 30 famous people would be chosen after consultation with the public.

"Ideally, if the people are alive they could attend the opening ceremony, while relatives might attend on behalf of others. The intention is to honour Welsh people from all walks of life."

A report on the plan is expected to go before the council's executive next month. "The cost won't be huge but we will need the go-ahead from the National Assembly," he added.
